What is Naturopathic Medicine - Treatment with a Back to Basics Approach
Naturopathic Medicine refers to a distinct system of healthcare that uses natural methods and substances to support and stimulate the body's inherent self-healing process. The naturopathic doctor views the individual as a whole where symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body and unfavorable lifestyle habits. The primary goal is to treat the underlying cause of the disease. Naturopathic doctors can also complement and enhance health care services provided by other health care professionals. They provide patients with a truly integrative form of health care. In order to treat the whole person and to individualize treatment, naturopathic doctors select and integrate the natural therapies appropriate to the individual patient. Naturopathic doctors have extensive academic and clinical training which involves a blend of medical theory and naturopathic theory and therapies. The goal of Naturopaths is to develop optimal wellness for each patient, and to educate them with the intention of cure and/or prevention. Although Naturopathic doctors are educated and trained to treat acute and chronic disease, prevention is the ultimate goal. This is based on the Naturopathic philosophy, that is, the philosophy of health care, not illness care.
